The Chesapeake region was among the first areas settled in the state's colonial era. Located along the Intracoastal Waterway in the heart of Coastal Virginia, Chesapeake was host to the Battle of Great Bridge in 1775. This American Revolution victory was responsible for removing all vestiges of British Government from the Colony and Dominion of Virginia. In 1963, the new independent city of Chesapeake was created when the former independent city of South Norfolk consolidated with Norfolk County.

Chesapeake is one of the larger cities in Virginia and the nation in terms of land area. It is the perfect place to rediscover outdoor adventure in a city full of natural wonders. Chesapeake is a diverse city and has many square miles of protected farmland, forests, and wetlands. Chesapeake is home to the Dismal Swamp Canal that connects southeastern Virginia to northeastern North Carolina and is recognized as the oldest continuously operating waterway in the United States. The 22-mile canal flows through the heart of the Great Dismal Swamp.
